The Kuali Coeus (KC) project is pleased to announce Kuali Coeus 3.1, released on-schedule on Friday, July 1, 2011!

KC 3.1 includes new functionality for all modules in current release – notably, integration between the IRB, Proposal Development, Institutional Proposal, and Awards modules.

The Proposal/Budget Development module, introduced with release 1.0 in 2008, adds valuable functionality, including:

  • Questionnaire for investigator certification and for the PHS398 Research Training Budget
  • Fourteen new Grants.gov forms, including forms for the PHS398 Fellowship and Training Grants, Career Development Awards, and R&R Subaward Budgets
  • Features to delete abandoned proposals, add attachments to a proposal enroute or rejected, add notes to a proposal enroute or in final status, and improvements in the Current & Pending Support reports
  • Proposal Budgets now include cost sharing period flexibility and the ability to display Version Comments on budget reports

The IRB module, which included protocol, committee, and review functions in KC 3.0, adds these great features:

  • Enhanced Online Review, including improved review comment management, institutional configuration to set visibility of reviewer identity, and improved workflow and business process for reviewer assignment and submission
  • More features for Questionnaire, including versioning and inactivation of questions and questionnaires, ability to associate questionnaires with amendments and protocol actions, and questionnaire printing
  • The IRB module also includes refactored print functionality, improved processes for returning protocols to researcher, multi-campus support through committee assignment in unit hierarchy, sorting and filtering of protocol attachments, and much more.

The Award module, initially released in KC 2.0, has a host of new features:

  • “Sync descendants” offers the ability to copy information from the parent award into selected descendant “child” awards.
  • The Award Budget includes the budget limits panel, direct costs limits and sync to direct cost limits to help manage the approved award budgets.
  • The Time & Money document now allows for direct & F&A costs breakdown, a transaction panel for single node awards, and improvements to the History and Action Summary.
  • The Award module also includes cost sharing period flexibility, Award Credit Split, Payment Schedule generation, and improvements to the print engine and sponsor templates.

Kuali Coeus 3.1 is a significant milestone on our path to achieving functional equivalence with Coeus.  This release also represents meaningful evolution in processes for KC; release 3.1 is our first release using a sprint methodology for development and quality assurance.

This release would not be possible without the dedicated work of the Kuali and Coeus participants on the Subcommittees/Subject Matter Expert Teams, Development Team, and Quality Assurance teams.  We are deeply grateful for the amazing effort of everyone involved in this project!

Kuali Coeus Release 3.1 will be featured at Kuali Days Nov 14-16 in Indianapolis.  Functional and technical staff will demonstrate KC 3.1, and are planning technical and functional sessions to cover current and future KC functionality.

Releases coming over the next 6 months will include: integration with KFS for account creation, awarded budgets, and use of shared values like object codes; integration with Rice to include KRMS (Kuali Rules Management System), an important piece of functionality to meet equivalence with Coeus; new modules for Conflict of Interest, Subawards, Negotiation, and Report Tracking.
