Problem

Colleges and universities need software systems that meet their needs, cost less to install, can evolve with changes in higher ed, cost less to operate, and can ensure that institutions get to make decisions about the destiny of these systems.

Studies have shown that universities have spent in the billions of dollars on the last round of big systems. Few believe that the economics of this decade can support another round of those expenditures and their inherent lack of creating any economies of scale for those costs across higher ed. The negative impact of continually installing and upgrading these large systems should be minimized, so that the focus is on delivery of the right solution to the individual users at the time those users need it.

Solution

Achieve more through collaboration

The Kuali Foundation enables colleges, universities, and commercial firms to achieve their collective objectives via open source collaboration. The foundation is not a vendor. It provides an efficient way to pool investments and achieve sustainable software at a total cost of ownership that is superior to all other options. That is a bold claim, and institutional evidence is mounting to prove its veracity.

The foundation is now home to eight projects (Financial, Research Administration, Student, HR/Payroll, Middleware/Workflow/Identity, Library, Business Continuity Planning, and Mobile) that are in varying stages of maturity. The most mature project, Financial, is now the institutional financial system for colleges large and small, hosted on premises or SaaS, and with a number of commercial support providers. Research Administration and Middleware/Workflow are also mature and installed fairly widely across the country.

The Kuali software cannot be taken away, closed down, or discontinued as a product line. Institutions can do their own support or bid among a number of commercial providers. And most importantly, the free information sharing among institutions for data models, implementation templates, reporting structures, and training materials further reduces what had been recurring institutional costs of collaboration.
